Poems, Prayers, & Promises ... and things that I believe in

Poetry has always been a part of my life. I’m not exactly sure where I find the words to write my poems or thoughts, most likely from lyrics of the many classic country musicians that have kept me good company over the years and have imbedded their own musical poetry in my mind. But I think we all have thoughts and words tucked away in our head, first heard in some conversation long forgotten. These words long dormant love to be awoken and find their way to a page if we slow our pace of life and let our mind come to peace and we sit in the silence of our world ... and we think, and we write ... with emotion and with total lack of fear. I suppose that is what this book is all about.

An Unexpected Journey: Searching for a Cause and Finding Hope in The Battle Against ALS

On July 11, 2013, my neurologist, after months of testing and exploring various parts of my body in search of something that would tell him differently, told me he highly suspected I had ALS. A long six weeks later, an ALS clinic confirmed that initial diagnosis. This book is a summation of my journey to date and the steps taken in treatment, conventional and otherwise. This book will not give you all the answers. My hope, though, is that this book will cause you to think, cause you to look beyond the norm, cause you to question everything you are doing relative to your medical care. My simple advice is to keep an open mind and understand that viable options do exist, but you are going to have to work to find them. This book will help illuminate your path.

    Smart Design: The HBE Story

Every time I look at the photo of the Logan, W.Va., addition and renovation project, as depicted on the cover, I am reminded of the uniqueness of this HBE design and construction firm. In my career, I am not sure I could think of any one individual or any one company or certainly any one structural engineer who would dare to risk it all by hanging a hospital building out over a raging river supported by piers driven into saturated soil on an unworkable hillside. Who does such a thing? And how and why? In many ways, this is the HBE story. A community in need; no space to expand; lack of funds to relocate and build new; but so much need and so much responsibility to serve its community. This is the need that Fred Kummer saw across the landscape of the United States. Welcome to SMART DESIGN – The HBE Story; if you are in the industry in any capacity, you will want to read this story, and my bet is you will find it fascinating.
